New stamps for 70 year anniversary of Blitz

<p><br /> As a new Prime Minister is welcomed in, an old one is given a commemoration by being imprinted on a stamp.<br /> </p><p><br /> Sir Winston Churchill is one of the images on a new series of Second World War stamps issued by Royal Mail, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Blitz.<br /> </p><p><br /> The war time Prime Minister appears on one of the first class stamps in the Britain Alone collection.<br /> </p><p><br /> Another of the 12 stamps features the less familiar faces of three young children being evacuated from London to Northampton.<br /> </p><p><br /> The picture, taken in 1941, shows the evacuees with labels attached to their lapels, waiting at King's Cross station.<br /> </p><p><br /> A 60p stamp in the collection depicts the three siblings - John Dawson, Barbara Southard and Rosemary Brett - reunited almost 70 years later to recreate the picture at the same station.<br /> </p><p><br /> The trio relived their train journey to Chislehurst Caves and were filmed and photgraphed for the occasion.<br /> </p><p><br /> Julietta Edgar, Royal Mail head of special stamps, said she hoped the stamp collection would serve as a "poignant reminder" of how much the country was affected by the Second World War.<br /> </p><p><br /> She said: "After the fall of France in 1940, Britain suffered a period of huge uncertainty and grave danger brought into sharp focus by the destruction of the Blitz and the possibility of defeat in the Battle of the Atlantic."<br /> </p><p><br /> The stamps, which will be on sale for a year, are issued on the 70th anniversary of Sir Winston's first speech to the House of Commons as Prime Minister.<br /> </p><p><br /> On May 13 1940, he famously told the Commons: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."<br /> </p>
